Greenville United Falls in PKs in NPSL Playoffs

Greenville United’s storybook season came to an end after a loss in overtime to the Alexandria Reds in the semifinals of the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference Playoffs.

After 10 minutes on the back foot, Greenville United began to find their way and dominated for the remainder of the first half.  However, this would not follow into the second half.  Both teams continued to push the pace in a very physical match, resulting in numerous yellow cards for several players throughout the remainder of the second half. After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the match continued into overtime.

Despite the game being goalless, it was anything but boring.  Both teams seemingly found a second wind in overtime and continued to batter each other with counterattacks.  A corner kick from Alexandria found the head of one of their players and was just barely tipped onto the post by Soren Russel in the 104th minute.  Another chance for Alexandria came a minute later as the ball made its way to their left winger.  It was chipped over Russel, only to have it cleared on the line by Greenville United center back Abubacarr Fofana.

Greenville United would find one more chance in the 112th minute as Cameron Holford received the ball off a cross but was denied by Alexandria’s goalkeeper.  This would be the last real goal scoring threat of the match, and it was 0–0 after 120 minutes.

The game went into penalty kicks with Alexandria winning 5-3.
