A defensive battle between Greenville United FC and Charlottetowne Hops FC ended in a 0-0 stalemate on Saturday, June 15 at John Paul II Catholic High School.
The beginning of the game was overall controlled by Greenville United as they controlled possession and had a couple chances that were off target. Charlottetowne’s first dangerous chance was in the 19th minute, but it was saved by Greenville United.
Due to the high temperatures, there were water breaks for both teams during both halves. A couple minutes after the first water break, Charlottetowne had a corner that was cleared out by the Greenville United defense right in front of the goal. Greenville would then have a chance of their own in the 42nd minute, but that shot was just above the goal.
Both teams decided to turn up the pressure in the second half. Luc Achermann started things off with a shot from the top corner of the box that was saved by a leaping Lucca Barros.
Charlottetowne had another chance in the 65th minute of the game, however, it was cleared out by defender Harry Davison. Their next chance was only five minutes later on a breakaway, but it was deemed offsides by the referees.
It was then back and forth in possession for both teams, and it became a midfield stalemate, which was the story for much of the game as both teams would trade off possession.
Charlottetowne Hops would get some of their best chances towards the end of the game, starting in the 88th minute when a header was off target. They would regain possession shortly after the Greenville United goal kick, and Charlottetowne’s Tyler Trimnal would get a chance that was saved by of Greenville United goalkeeper Chase Jansen.
In the closing minutes of the game, Charlottetowne’s Aiden Gummer would get two back-to-back chances. The first one was off a low corner kick that found its target on goal that was picked up by Jansen, and another shot was also saved by the Greenville United keeper.
Extra time would get chippy as players from both sides would foul trying to get that coveted game-winner for their club. Neither team was able to score, and the match ended in a hard-fought draw.
The Charlottetowne Hops are certainly not new to having clean sheets. Today’s result was their fourth shutout of the season, and the team has only allowed three goals all season. As for Greenville United, this was their first shutout of the season with the clean sheet going to Jansen.
The game was Charlottetowne’s first draw in the conference, moving them to a record 3-2-1. They will travel to the North Carolina Foothills for a matchup with Hickory FC who currently sit at the top of the conference standings. Greenville United extends its streak of draws to three to improve to 0-3-3 in conference play. Greenville will head up to Knoxville, Tennessee on Wednesday in search of their first win of the season against the 865 Alliance.
